The Way to Spiritual Growth
The Way to Spiritual Growth
In Isaiah 28:9-13 we read that the Lord had told the Hebrews about the rest and refreshing to be found in Him. (v. 12)
He sought to teach them knowledge. (v. 9)
But they kept looking at the word as "precept upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little, and there a little"
I was taught to look at the Bible in just this way. I tried to look for instructions about my behavior. I thought that precept upon precept, line upon line, I would grow more spiritually mature and move beyond struggling with sin.
I never saw the end of verse 13 in this passage. It reads, "[so] that they might go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken."
That's exactly what happened to me. I lived on a spiritual roller-coaster. Going and falling backward until I was broken, ensnared by sin, and taken from the freedom Jesus bought for me.
That's what mixing the old covenant with the new covenant does.
The Hebrews failed to see that Messiah (to be revealed as Jesus) was the message of the Scriptures. They sought to perfect themselves little by little.
The truth of the unadulterated Gospel isn't like that at all.
The moment you believe, you are given everything you need for life and godliness.
You are made holy and righteous, lacking nothing.
It happens all at once.
You will spend the rest of your life and all eternity plumbing the depths of what you've been given.
Deeper understanding of who you have become
knowing God better and better,
more complete dependance upon Christ in you,
This is rest for the weary.
This is refreshing for the soul.
This is spiritual growth.
