How God Works in the Mind

How God Works in the Mind

I'm no expert on the physiology of the mind, but here are my thoughts on how Father works in our minds.

In Hebrews 4:12 we find, "For the word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword, even penetrating as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart." (NASB 2020)

I think that Holy Spirit is able to work in us to heal, repair, and renew broken parts. This passage in Hebrews certainly seems to indicate that the word of God goes to the very deepest level of our being.

Additionally, in 1 Corinthians 6:17 we read that those who have joined themselves with the Lord are one spirit with Him. This close union involves communication of a kind that is not necessarily cognitive or verbal. More evidence for this idea is found in Romans 8:16 where we read, "The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God" (NASB 2020)

Consequently, even when things such as reading and consciously meditating on the word of God are impossible, or simply neglected, Father is able to work in our hearts and minds at the deepest level.

I think this line of reason is also applicable for those who are otherwise mentally unable to process normally. Those with various forms of mental illness and those with developmental issues or other mental limitations, for example.

Romans 8:26–27 says, "Now in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know what to pray for as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words; and He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He intercedes for the saints according to the will of God." (NASB 2020)

Often, we limit our thoughts about interaction with God to verbal forms, i.e. prayer. I think there is ample room for seeing our spiritual union with God as a means by which our loving God is at work within His children at the deepest level.
