Truths About You

Recently I wrote that over the long term you will think and act like the person you believe you are. Consequently, it's important to have a firm grasp on your identity.

We can’t have the enemy saying that these are things you made up in your head.

So, here again is a peek at your identity in Christ. This time, I’ve expanded it by adding a few of the scripture passages that back up these claims.

You are God's child.

Romans 8:14–16 (NASB 2020)

14 For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons and daughters of God.

15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons and daughters by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”

16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God,

1 John 3:1–2 (NASB 2020)

1 See how great a love the Father has given us, that we would be called children of God; and in fact we are. For this reason the world does not know us: because it did not know Him. 2 Beloved, now we are children of God…

You are a partaker of God's nature.

2 Peter 1:4 (NASB 2020)

4 Through these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world on account of lust.

1 John 3:9 (NASB 2020)

9 No one who has been born of God practices sin, because His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin continually, because he has been born of God.

You have inherited godly traits.

1 John 4:17 (NASB 2020)

17 By this, love is perfected with us, so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment; because as He is, we also are in this world.

1 John 4:7–8 (NASB 2020)

7 Beloved, let’s love one another; for love is from God, and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.

8 The one who does not love does not know God, because God is love.

Romans 5:5b (NASB 2020)

5b the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

2 Corinthians 5:21 (NASB 2020)

21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin in our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

You are an heir of God's kingdom.

 Romans 8:17a (NASB 2020)

17a and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ…

Colossians 3:24a (NASB 2020)

24a knowing that it is from the Lord that you will receive the reward of the inheritance

Matthew 25:34 (NASB 2020)

34 “Then the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.

You are righteous at the core.

 2 Corinthians 5:21 (NASB 2020)

21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin in our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Colossians 1:21–22 (NASB 2020)

21 And although you were previously alienated and hostile in attitude, engaged in evil deeds,

22 yet He has now reconciled you in His body of flesh through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach—

Ephesians 1:3–4 (NASB 2020)

3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,

4just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him.

You are closer to God than to a sibling or a spouse.

 Proverbs 18:24b (NASB 2020)

24b…there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

John 17:20–21 (NASB 2020)

20 “I am not asking on behalf of these alone, but also for those who believe in Me through their word,

21 that they may all be one; just as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.

You are fully known, and fully loved by Him.

 Psalm 139:13–16 (NASB 2020)

13 For You created my innermost parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb.

14 I will give thanks to You, because I am awesomely and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.

15 My frame was not hidden from You When I was made in secret, And skillfully formed in the depths of the earth;

16 Your eyes have seen my formless substance; And in Your book were written All the days that were ordained for me, When as yet there was not one of them.

Luke 12:7 (NASB 2020)

7 But even the hairs of your head are all counted. Do not fear; you are more valuable than a great number of sparrows.

1 John 4:9–11 (NASB 2020)

9By this the love of God was revealed in us, that God has sent His only Son into the world so that we may live through Him.

10In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

11Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.
