Why Did Jesus Come?

Let’s see why Jesus came.

Luke 2:10-11 (KJV)

10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

He is our savior. He came to deal with the dire situation into which we had placed ourselves. Gospel means good news, and this is the best news. It is good tidings of great joy, and it’s for all people—Jews and Greeks, slave and free, male and female, you and me.

John 3:14-17 (KJV)

14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: 15 That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life.

Numbers 21:8-9 (KJV)

8 And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. 9 And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.

There was nothing special about the snake on a pole. This was just another picture of the covenant to come. God’s grace experienced by faith. If the people believed God, they lived. If we believe God, we will live also.

Now back to John chapter 3:

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

He came to save us by giving us everlasting life. The only everlasting life that exists is God’s life. He is life. He came to give us His life!

John 5:24-26 (KJV)

24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life. 25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;

Before we open the gracious gift of forgiveness, re-creation, and relationship, we are all dead. Then we hear the good news of Jesus Christ, believe it, and live. “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Romans 10:17 (KJV)

(He who has an ear, let him hear.)

He says we have passed from death to life. We are physically alive before and after belief, so this can only be referring to spiritual life. God has life in Himself and that’s why He can give us life—His life.

John 3:5-6 (KJV)

5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

Here we see it again, the Spirit gives birth to spirit. This is what God promised in Ezekiel 36:26-27 (KJV)

26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. 27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

John 10:10 (KJV)

10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

He came to give us abundant life. That is not just in heaven, it is now. Everlasting life begins the moment we believe. Everlasting life is abundant. It never ends; that sounds like immortality.

John 4:34 (KJV)

34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

He came to do the will of the Father, and to finish His work. John goes on to tell us what the Father’s will for Jesus was.

John 6:37-40 (KJV)

37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. 38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. 39 And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. 40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

He came to save people who were dead in sin by giving them life and He was successful.

Galatians 1:4 (KJV)

4 Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:

Colossians 1:13 (KJV)

13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

He took us from our enslavement to the power of sin and transferred us into His kingdom.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)

17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

As He promised in the passage we just read in Ezekiel 36, He made us new creatures by giving us a new spirit and putting His Spirit in us.

Jesus came to give us life. He came to give us His life. He recreated us by removing our hard old heart and giving us a soft loving new one. He made us His children and joined Himself to us at the deepest level of our being, our spirit. His Spirit live in us and we live in Him.
